About the Arunachalam trip
Arunachalam, or Tiruvannamalai, is where Shiva is worshipped as the element of fire. The Annamalaiyar temple is one of the largest in India, but the real reason lakhs of people arrive here every full moon is Girivalam — the 14 kilometre circumambulation of the Arunachala hill, walked barefoot through the night.
Pournami Girivalam is beautiful and utterly chaotic. Roads shut, parking moves several kilometres out, and the walk takes four to six hours. A trip planned without knowing where to stay, where the vehicle can wait and which of the eight Ashtalingams to pause at becomes an ordeal.
We choose the stay on the correct side of the hill for your walking direction, keep the vehicle at a reachable point, and tell you honestly what a Pournami night looks like before you confirm.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival and temple darshan
Reach Tiruvannamalai by afternoon, Arunachaleswarar temple darshan, Ramana Ashram in the evening, light dinner before the walk.
Day 2
Girivalam and return
Begin Girivalam late at night or before dawn, complete the 14 km loop with Ashtalingam stops, rest, then depart after lunch.

Frequently asked questions about Arunachalam
How long does Girivalam take?
The 14 km loop takes four to six hours at a normal pace with darshan stops at the Ashtalingams. Starting around 10 PM or 4 AM avoids the heat.
Is Arunachalam worth visiting on a non-Pournami day?
Absolutely. The temple is calmer, the hill walk is peaceful, and stays cost half as much. We recommend it for first-timers and for elders.
Can elders do the Girivalam?
Many do it slowly over a longer stretch, and an inner-path vehicle drop is possible on ordinary days. On Pournami nights we suggest a partial walk instead.
